Susan: I like that “come out when you’re ready…” line. I just figured punishments aren’t supposed to be fun, but you’re right. If both parties are happier after, I guess it doesn’t matter.

Since #1 was about 2, I've sent my kids to their room when they weren't behaving. "Come out when you're ready to follow the rules around here," I'll tell them. Yeah, they may have a good time up there and stay for hours. That's fine. What I'm trying to do is teach them to reset their attitudes, and if it takes their playing to do that, I'm all for it. Plus, it gives me some peace. Now that my kids are a bit older, they're starting to gravitate toward playing in their rooms, with friends or without.
